NPFDA ANNOUNCES NEW PROGRAM FOR DISTRIBUTORS!

The National Poultry & Food Distributors Association (NPFDA) has launched its Certified Distributor Program.  This new program will give its participating distributors more credibility and a real designation as a Certified Distributor. Participating distributors will be inspected /audited by an inspection /audit company, whether it is the USDA, PMC, or AIB, etc., and will provide NPFDA with documentation that they abide by a set of standards with regard to food safety, receiving procedures, recall procedures, etc. The program will have a basic set of standards and is designed to keep it simple - using audit/inspection companies that members may already utilize. Companies who have no current audit program will be provided with various options to comply. This program will be promoted industry-wide.  Companies must be a NPFDA member to participate.

The Certified Distributor Program will give participating distributors a level of credibility that will be industry recognized. Participating distributors will be provided with documentation (for sales and the office) stating that they are a Certified Distributor and thereby, do maintain a set of standards with regard to food safety, recall procedures, etc. This certification should be well received by their customers and suppliers. Participants will receive Certified Distributor logos for their invoices and letterhead. Participants will also be provided with decals for their trucks stating that they are a "NPFDA Certified Distributor."

Kristin McWhorter, NPFDA Executive Director states “NPFDA is very excited about this program as the program should ensure that product reaching retail operations has met safe food handling requirements. NPFDA Member participants will enjoy recognition and certification that their competitors may not have. Should there be a product recall, the program will make tracking that product more efficient and faster”.

The Program audit will include written procedures ensuring that the following procedures are in place and practiced: Safe food handling practices, pest control, proper storage of food products, proper storage of chemicals, general sanitation, temperature controls, proper receiving, storage and shipping procedures including check-offs regarding truck and product condition, dock and cooler sanitation, written recall procedures as well as many other required procedures.  Participating companies will have to be sure their current audit covers all the areas required by NPFDA – there will be no need to hire a new audit/inspection companies.  Only distributors who do not have a program in place will have to acquire an audit company.  The certification will be good for one year with annual renewals upon receipt of new documentation.

The program will cost participating distributors a minimal fee to cover the cost of printing the Truck Decals.

Doug Carnes

2008 NPFDA Poultry Industry Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

WALTER COOPER, PILGRIM’S PRIDE CORP. SELECTED AS NPFDA’S

2007 MEMBER OF THE YEAR

The National Poultry and Food Distributors Association selected Walter Cooper of Pilgrim’s Pride Corp. as the 2007Member of the Year.

Cooper has been in the poultry industry since the mid 90's and has made great strides since his involvement in the industry - and has proven to be a very valuable member of NPFDA and the NPFDA Board of Directors.

He began with ConAgra in Dalton, GA and was promoted three times within four years. He now is Director of Commodity Sales and Food Service for Pilgrim’s Pride Corp., Atlanta, GA.

Cooper has a Masters Degree from Brenau University of Gainesville, GA. Cooper is married to Angie and has two sons who currently reside in Gainesville, GA. Besides being a great dad - he is also a great hunter.

Keith Mennella shares: They call him Mr. 98%, because when he goes quail hunting he kills 98% of the birds he shoots at. He killed a brown bear last trip - When he came upon it, it was asleep and they had to wake it up so he could shoot hit. He wants to go to Africa to dart, not kill, a rhino. He says they knock it out and you can take a picture with it and

measurement and then they make a model of it. He has some Hunting trophies in his basement that he proudly calls, “Coopers Wild Kingdom.”

Congratulations, Walter for being selected as this year’s Member of the Year!! And thank you for all your hard work!!

C.C. HILL RECEIVES NPFDA’S FIRST HONORARY

LIFETIME MEMBER

NPFDA is very proud to announce that Charles C. Hill is the first person to receive

an Honorary NPFDA Lifetime Membership.

C.C. (Charles C) Hill recently retired from the poultry industry after many years of

dedication to the industry, poultry associations, and mostly, his customers and peers.

C.C. has an aurora of genuine friendliness, kindness and goodwill. He has always

been a sort of “Ambassador” for NPFDA and its members. He exhibits qualities that

one should always want to encompass.

C.C. Hill is one who believes “Do more than what you say and be accountable for

what you do,” “Look for the bright spot always,” and, “Say good things and regularly

pray for your customers, company and friends.”

As Bill Roenigk with NCC said, “I believe his career started on the dark side (red

meat) but he eventually saw the light and switched to the right side (chicken).”

Hill began his career with Hygrade Food Products in Orangeburg, SC where he spent

16 years working his way to VP of Sales. He then went to work for the next 19 years

as President and Owner of Shull Sausage Company in West Columbia, SC. Then he

joined Amick Farms as VP of Marketing. After Amick Farms, he went to work for

Columbia Farms. Afterwards he went to work for Claxton Poultry until 2002 when

he went to work for Marshall Durbin where he worked until his retirement on October

12, 2007. C.C. Hill was employed with Marshall Durbin Companies as National

Accounts Manager with specific responsibility for oversight of KFC, Bojangle's and

Church's.

He has served on the NPFDA Board of Directors and was President of NPFDA, he was selected as NPFDA’s 1999 Member of the Year – an award he could have received many times over. He was an active member of the National Chicken Council Marketing Committee for many years and was especially supportive of the Chicken Marketing Seminar.

Kristin McWhorter with NPFDA said, “I think Mitch Mitchell of Marshall Durbin spoke for all of us when he stated”: Although he was only with us for a little over 5 years, the impact that he had on Marshall Durbin Companies was and still is profound. Under his guidance, each of the accounts that he oversaw had tremendous growth and a significant contribution to the bottom line of the company. Above all, his attitude, loyalty, integrity and general manner established relationships that Marshall Durbin Companies and the respective customers will benefit from

for many years to come. The lessons that he taught all of us in how to conduct business on an ongoing basis are invaluable and he is and will be missed for a long time to come.

Congratulations, C.C., for becoming NPFDA’s first Honorary Lifetime Member!!
