4 ways AI already powers the broiler industry

The broiler industry isn't waiting on artificial intelligence (AI). It's already using it.

At the 2026 Chicken Marketing Summit, held July 27-29 at the Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida, Walker Byrnes, research engineer, Georgia Tech Research Institute, Joshua Gillespie, vice president of sales, Baader Food Systems and Kevin Ryan, founder/CEO, Malachite Strategy and Research shared how AI is already driving improvements in efficiency, bird welfare and food safety — and what may come next.

Here are four ways AI is already reshaping the broiler supply chain, according to the panel.

1. Robots are doing a lot more

A mobile robot developed by the Georgia Tech Research Institute team locates and collects floor eggs, combining a discriminative AI vision system with generative AI models that generate its navigation and pickup actions.

Byrnes said the same platform can also carry mobile environmental sensors that monitor temperature, CO2 and ammonia levels, check for equipment problems such as clogged drinker lines, remove mortalities and encourage bird activity. He confirmed the robot operates fully autonomously, but described it as a research platform, not yet commercially mature.

2. House controls are getting smarter

AI's next step in broiler house management will likely involve tying flock performance history to real-time sensor data for humidity, temperature and water consumption to optimize individual house performance, but only if producers first define clear key performance indicators, Byrnes cautioned.

"If you don't have something you're specifically looking for, it's going to significantly decrease the chance that you're going to be successful,” he said.

3. Processing floors are catching problems in real time

On the processing floor, AI has already been present for five or six years in the form of vision grading systems for continuous yield monitoring, machine performance, bird health conditions and foreign material detection, Gillespie said.

Real-time data is the key benefit, he added, allowing plants to catch equipment issues as they occur rather than days later.

"Today we can see those issues as they occur, and we can start to predict what's going to happen," said Gillespie. "Then we can send out notifications that hey, you've got a problem."

4. Consumers let AI to decide what's for dinner

For consumer-facing chicken brands, AI's biggest impact lies in reducing friction in decision-making, even as broader public skepticism of AI companies persists, Ryan said. As users feed personal details such as dietary needs into AI assistants, the systems become more useful and consumers become more reliant on them, including for generating shopping lists.

That shift raises new questions for chicken marketers about getting branded content, such as recipes, surfaced by AI systems, since the industry is still in early, unsettled territory when it comes to understanding how AI models select and attribute content, Ryan cautioned.

"We're going to go to a point where the gatekeeper is AI," he said. "We're so bombarded with information — it's the attention economy — that we want that filter, and AI is now becoming that filter."
